I decided to keep track of the books and what I am learning from them to remind myself of the key take-aways. Here is what I've done so far.... (and what Miss Darcy is doing can be found here)
Reading for Fun
1. A book with a reputation for being un-put-down-able: The Accident
- What I got from the book: Never too late to do the right thing and make up for your past mistakes, and it won’t be easy but worth the effort.
- My review on Goodreads
2. A book you’ve already read: Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality
- What I got from the book: In many ways what we’re seeing as we explore the Bible is an observing of the development of human consciousness and human readiness for God.
- My review on Goodreads
3. A juicy memoir: Bossypants by Tiny Fey
- What I got from the book: Don’t worry about what other people think and definitely don’t do anything to please others. Always be yourself and don’t be afraid of your own strength. And make jokes about everything, especially the most embarrassing parts.
- My review on Goodreads
4. A book about books or reading: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
- What I got from the book: Life is full of horrible people doing evil deeds and those you love, including yourself, may be caught up in them - but always do the right thing and be a hero. People are eccentric and imperfect but that is what makes them precious and nothing is more valuable than community. Reading and opening your mind to new insights and ideas is one of the best joys of being human.
- My review on Goodreads
5. A book about books or reading: The Jane Austen Book Club
- What I got from the book: Learn about Jane Austen and her books and her impact by the way she continues to have influence over people today.
- My review on Goodreads
Reading for Growth
1. A book that is more than 600 pages: Total Control
- What I got from the book: Money and power is extremely tempting and will catch even those you don't think are vulnerable. Be wary! The true heroic stance is to work for the public good and resist temptation, because you know there are things more important than money. Don’t worry about what other people think and definitely don’t do anything to please others. Always be yourself and don’t be afraid of your own strength. And make jokes about everything, especially the most embarrassing parts.
- My review on Goodreads
2. A book in a genre you usually avoid: The Deep
- Evaluative Point: Mysteries and horrors are at the edge of our everyday life and we never know when they will come at us. We are not in control.
- My review on Goodreads
